How to Stay Healthy During Cold & Flu Season

Does it seem like everyone is sick right now, or is it just me?  

 

If you already got slammed with a cold or the flu or that nasty stomach bug, my sympathy is with you! Let's keep you feeling good for the remainder of the season! And if you've been lucky enough to have been in the clear thus far, let's keep that lucky streak going!

 

Ps.) Even if you got the flu shot, experts are claiming that it's only about 10% effective this year. So here are a few things that you can do daily to keep that immune system flying high!

  1. Wash Those Hands

    • Try to get into the habit of washing your hands after you walk in the door from being out of the house, if you do not already do so. Get your little ones to get into this habit as well! And of course, wash up before you eat, even if you think your hand aren't dirty, we don't want to take any chances. Also, try to avoid touching your face and mouth to prevent germs from traveling. 

  2. Eat a Variety of Produce 

    • Try to consume a variety of different colored fruits and veggies daily. Think....Red strawberries, cherries or tomatoes. Orange papaya, mango, or melon. Yellow bananas, lemons, or bell peppers. Green leafy vegetables, kiwis or broccoli. Blue plums, berries or grapes. Purple raspberries, rashes or eggplant. 

  3. Stay Hydrated 

    • Aim to drink half of your body weight in oz. of water daily. For example, if you weight 200 lbs., aim to drink 100 oz of water daily. My little hack that helps me drink more water is to carry a water bottle around that has a straw. Like this one. It encourages easy sipping throughout the day! 

  4. Sleep, Sleep, Sleep

    • I can not emphasize this point enough. Sleep is when your body is healing and repairing itself. If you skimp on your 7-8 hours of sleep, it most likely will catch up with you and have you down for the count for at least a couple days to make up for it.

  5. Raw Apple Cider Vinegar 

    • Raw Apple cider vinegar aides in detoxification by breaking up mucus throughout the body and cleansing the lymph nodes to allow for better lymph circulation. A healthy lymphatic system can remove toxins from the cells in the body while improving immune system response. Apple Cider Vinegar also has many other beneficial healing qualities!   6. Exercise

    • Get your body moving and sweat out all those toxins! Plus exercise causes changes in antibodies and white blood cells. While blood cells are the body's immune system cells that fight disease.

  7. Essential Oils

    • Essential oils have not only been extremely helpful in improving my immune system, my oils have supported me in a wide variety of other areas of my life including improving my sleep, mood and energy.

  8. Raw Garlic

    • I know guys, this sounds like a weird one but garlic has amazingly powerful natural antibiotic properties! Try by chopping up a very small clove and consuming it once a day but not exceeding 3 cloves a day. Just swallow the garlic like a pill with a smoothie or other drink.

  9. Take a Vitamin C and Zinc Supplement 

    • Don't wait until you're sick to start taking these two supplements.
